How to Do a Back Flip in the Water

The swimming pool is the perfect place to spend a hot summer day, jumping and diving with your friends. All the other kids will be watching your tricks and doing a back flip in the water is very cool. When you're ready to attempt the rolling stunt, a few guidelines will have you flipping like a pro in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Start in water that is approximately chest deep. Shallower water creates a danger of bumping your head and deeper water won't allow you to get good height from your jump.

    • 2

Take a deep breath as you begin and hold it or wear a nose clip. The trick to keeping water from going up your nose when you're upside down is to hum. Try it a couple of times before you attempt a flip. Just go underwater and hum; you'll blow a slow stream of bubbles out of your nose, keeping water from entering.

    • 3

Jump with all your might and arch your back, throwing your arms up and letting the back of your head enter the water first. Rotate your body backwards as you jump. Your goal is to turn yourself upside down in the water.

    • 4

Swoosh the water with your arms as your head sinks underneath. Since your arms are already overhead, just bring them forcefully downwards in front of you while continuing to keep your head arched backwards.

    • 5

Tuck your knees to bring your flip around the last portion of the way. Until now, you've been in an arch but as your body rotates, tucking your knees sharply will finish the flip.

Regain your footing on the bottom of the pool and stand up.
