How to Match a Tennis Racket With a Player

While every tennis racket may appear the same to the naked eye, there are several factors that go into finding the perfect racket for each player. You must consider the length, weight, grip and stringing of the racket, among other things. However, just follow a few general guidelines to find the perfect racket for the player and his or her style of play.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a smaller racket head if the player is more accomplished and is simply trying to add to his control.

    • 2

Select a large racket head for an intermediate tennis player who is trying to add power and a larger sweet spot.

    • 3

Pick a racket longer than the standard 27-inch racket length if the player needs to add more reach to his ground stroke. A longer racket also provides more power.

    • 4

Opt for a heavier, head-light racket if the player can supply her own power and is merely looking for control.

    • 5

Decide on the frame stiffness based on the player's own individual comfort level. For instance, if the player has elbow or shoulder problems, a medium-stiff frame is a better choice.

    • 6

Choose a more open string pattern if the player is looking to increase the spin on the ball.

    • 7

Select the racket grip according to the player's own personal comfort. For instance, some grips are made to incorporate shock better than others.
