Discus Throwing Games
-
Hula Hoops
-
Place four hula hoops in front of the discus circle, at 25 feet, 50 feet, 75 feet and 100 feet. Athletes score a point by landing discus in the nearest circle, 2 points for the next, 3 points for the next and 4 points for the farthest. Each athlete gets 10 throws. This game is a good way to practice and improve the release point for the throw.
Bowling
-
"Bowl" the discus on its edge down the track. The athlete who is able to bowl the discus the farthest wins. A variation is to see how far the discus can roll between a set of lane lines. This game encourages proper release points.
Change Hands
-
Athletes compete using their left (or opposite) hand. Measure the distance as you would a normal throw. This forces the athlete to focus on technique to accomplish a successful throw.
Fast Throws
-
Allow the athlete to bring four discs into the circle and place them in the back. Each athlete gets 30 seconds to throw all four discs. Add the distances, and the thrower with the longest total wins. This encourages the athlete to fight through any mental roadblocks and just throw.
