How to Choose a Shot Put

Choosing a shot put is more about education than strength. Shot puts come is a variety of sizes, shapes and materials. Knowing which shot put is best for you will depend upon several factors.

      Size does matter. When choosing a shot put, the size and weight of the shot will depend upon your sex and age. Females junior high level and younger will throw a 6 lb. shot. Females high school age and above will throw an 8 lb. shot. Males, on the other hand, are a bit more complicated. Ages 12 and under throw a 6 lb. shot, 13-14 an 8 lb. shot, high school age a 12 lb, shot and college a 16 lb. shot.

      Material matters as well. Shots are available in several different materials depending upon your likes and throwing expertise. Throwers can choose from iron, steel and brass.

      Indoor or outdoor. Track and field season is comprised of both indoor and outdoor seasons. For outdoor shot put season, choose a shot put without a padded covering. For indoor season, padded steel shot puts are available.
