How to Keep USAV Volleyball Player Statistics

The fast-paced nature of volleyball is exciting for players and spectators, but it can provide challenges for the scorekeeper. USA Volleyball uses standardized scoring sheets to simplify the scoring process and prevent errors. Statistics are key to determining a player's effectiveness. Also, statistics are reported to colleges for scholarship eligibility and national agencies for national team qualifications.

Instructions

      Write down the names of the players on the official score sheet in order of service. Record the total score and the points each player scores.

      Write down the number of times each player contacted the ball. This is indicated by tic marks in each player's column.

      Mark more detailed statistics in each player's column using special instruction abbreviations, explained in the following steps. Special instructions are specific tasks that are common in volleyball.

      Record the number of attempts a player has made. An attempt is any time a player tries to hit the ball over the net. It is recorded as "ATT" on the score sheet.

      Record the number of kills, assists, and digs a player performed in the game. A kill is when an attack is unreturnable by the opponent. It is recorded as a "K." A player is awarded an assist whenever that player passes, sets or digs the ball to a teammate who attacks the ball for a kill. An assist is recorded as an "A." A dig is awarded when a player passes the ball that has been attacked by the opposition. Digs only are given when players receive an attacked ball and it is kept in play. Digs are recorded as "D."

      Write down the number of errors each player has made in the game. An attack error is any time a player hits the ball out of bounds, goes into the net or hits the ball illegally. It is recorded as an "E." An error during service is recorded as "SE."

      Record the number of service aces a player performed in the game. A service ace is a serve that results directly in a point. It is recorded as "SA."
