Volleyball Drills for Beginners

Volleyball can be a very competitive game that requires athleticism, great hand/eye coordination and leaping ability. In order to improve, young players can do several drills in practice to help upgrade their skill level.
  1. Set, Set, Hit Drill

    • Have three players stand at the end line of the court. The coach will count to three and then toss the ball high over the net on the right side. All players will run toward the front of the court at three. The player on the outside right will set the ball to the player on the outside left. That player will set the ball to the middle striker. The middle striker will spike the ball over the net. This develops timing, teamwork and leaping ability.

    Rapid-Serve Drill

    • This involves a coach and a player. The coach will pass the ball to the player who is standing behind the service line. The player will serve the ball as soon as she receives the coach's pass. As soon as she releases her serve, the coach will pass her another ball that she must serve in rapid succession. The coach will end up making 10 passes, and the idea is for the server to come up with at least five good serves when having little time to prepare for the shot. This improves serving accuracy and power.

    Greed Drill

    • Put six players on each side of the net. Give each team six volleyballs. Team A will serve two volleyballs at a time. The team that wins the points gets to keep the volleyball. After team A serves, team B gets its opportunity. After each team has served its six balls, the winner is the side that has accumulated the most volleyballs. This helps develop team play and hand/eye coordination.
