What is a Volleyball Made of?

A volleyball is used to play indoor volleyball or beach volleyball. There are several different brands, but they are all assembled in the same way.
  1. Shape

    • Volleyballs are round and normally consist of eighteen rectangular panels, arranged in six identical sections.

    Material

    • Volleyballs are made of synthetic or genuine leather, which is wrapped around a rubber and butyl material known as the bladder.

    Size

    • The youth version of an indoor volleyball is smaller and weighs much less than an adult volleyball.

      The average youth volleyball weighs about 9 oz. and is 25 to 26 inches in circumference. An adult volleyball can weigh up to 10 oz. and is 25 1/2 to 26 1/2 inches in circumference. Beach volleyballs have a heavier weight and are slightly larger. They normally weigh 10 oz. and are 26 to 27 inches circumference.

    Features

    • Traditional indoor volleyballs are white, but sometimes there are three different colors mixed together. Outdoor volleyballs are normally brightly colored.

    Types

    • There are many different brands of volleyballs, but some of the most popular are Mikasa, Tachikara, Wilson and Molten.
