How Do I Register My Kayak in Oklahoma?

Oklahoma state law requires that all boats be registered before they can legally be operated within the state. This law includes the registration of canoes and kayaks. Your kayak must be registered within 30 days of purchase. Upon registration of your kayak, you must carry your certificate of registration whenever the kayak is in operation. Failure to do so can result in fines and penalties.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the MSO (Manufacturer's Statement of Origin) and boat inspection form for your boat. The MSO and boat inspection form should have been included with the paperwork that you received when you purchased the boat. The MSO and inspection form must be notarized by the boat dealer when you purchase the watercraft.

Visit a Oklahoma Tax Commission office. Ask the Tax Commission representative for the “Application for a Certificate of Title for a Boat or Outboard Motor.”

    • 3

Complete the title application. Submit the title application along with the MSO and boat inspection form to the representative.

    • 4

Wait for the Tax Commission representative to tell you of the amount you must pay to register your kayak in Oklahoma. The amount of taxes you must pay will vary depending upon the price you paid for the kayak and the year the kayak was made. However, as a rule of thumb, you will pay $1 if the boat is valued at $150 or less. You will be charged an additional $1 for every $100 over the first $150.

Pay the representative the taxes. Wait to receive your title, registration number and kayak decal. You will receive these items on the same day as your visit to the Tax Commission.
