1
Grip the shaft of the paddle with both of your hands. Raise the paddle so that the center of it rests on top of your head.
-
2
Adjust where your hands hold the shaft in order to achieve a 90-degree bend in your elbows. You may wish to look in a mirror while you do this.
-
3
Try several different paddles to find the right one. Examine the amount of space left between one hand and the paddle nearest it. If there is less than one hand-length of space, you need a larger paddle. If there are more than two hand-lengths to the paddle, you need a smaller paddle.
-
4
Use the process of trial and error to find an appropriate paddle for you. Ask the proprietor of your kayak shop to let you test different paddles to find the best one for you.
-
5
Adjust your paddle choice to suit your kayak. If you have a wider kayak, you will need a longer paddle, and vice versa with a more narrow kayak.
