How to Fix Scratches on a Skimboard

A skimboard is a cross between a skateboard and a surfboard. The skimboarder rides the skimboard on the beach close to the water where he can catch leftover water from the last big wave to wash up on shore. He then skims off the beach and into the water to catch the next wave. The skimboard is wider and longer than a skateboard and has no wheels, but it is thinner and shorter than a surfboard and made from the same material. You can easily scratch your skimboard when you are riding it in shallow water on the beach. You can fix scratches on a skimboard with a fiberglass repair kit.

  • Utility knife
  • 60-grit sandpaper

      Check the entire skimboard for scratches and place a piece of masking tape next to each one so you will remember where they are.

      Cut the scratch out of the board with a utility knife. Just cut the surface of your skimboard; don't cut into the foam board or cut away any more fiberglass from the board than is necessary to remove the scratch.

      Sand the complete area around the former scratch with a coarse 60-grit sandpaper. Sand until the surface is rough.

      Remove a piece of cloth from the fiberglass repair kit (available at sporting goods stores, hardware stores and surf shops). Use scissors to cut the cloth the size and shape of the area you sanded.

      Mix the resin and catalyst from the fiberglass repair kit into a paste in a bowl. The paste should be the consistency of pudding.

      Apply the paste mixture to the entire roughened area on the skimboard where you sanded, the area where the scratch used to be. Let the paste completely harden for 30 minutes.

      Sand the repaired area smooth with a fine 400-grit sandpaper. Smooth until the repaired area blends in with the rest of the skimboard.
