What Is the Purpose & Function of the Hamstring?

The hamstrings are tendons on the back of the thighs.They connect the hamstring muscles on the backs of the thighs to the tibia and fibula bones in the lower legs. These muscles are known as hamstring muscles, although the term "hamstring" is sometimes mistakenly used to refer to both the tendons and the muscles.
  1. Flexion

    • The main function of the hamstring is to help flex the knee, both as an isolated exercise and during activities such as walking or jogging.

    Extension

    • When the thigh is moved backward, the hamstring helps extend the hip appropriately.

    Running

    • Hamstrings are particularly important during running, jumping and walking, as they help control the movement of the knee during fast activities.

    Injuries

    • Injuries of the hamstrings are common and happen when the muscle stretches beyond its ability or is strained or torn. These injuries are common in sports such as soccer, running and climbing.

    Problems

    • When a hamstring is injured, the person limps and experiences tightness in the back of the leg, along with swelling and problems bending and strengthening the knee.
