How to Do Great on a Mascot Tryout

A team mascot is responsible for getting fans of the team out to support the team, and for getting those fans energized when the game begins. When trying out for a position as a team mascot an individual must show they have all the necessary talents to put on an entertaining show while inside the costume, as well as keep it up for an entire game. While every team or school's requirements will vary, there are some basic keys to focus on to improve your chance of being selected.

Instructions

    • 1

Stretch thoroughly prior to your tryout, as it will often require acrobatic maneuvers that can lead to injury without proper stretching. An injury during tryouts is unlikely to impress the judges.

    • 2

Hydrate prior to beginning your tryouts. Mascot costumes are often quite hot and can cause you to sweat profusely during the tryouts, which can lead to dehydration that will affect your performance.

    • 3

Learn any team-specific dances you will need to know and study all the steps of the dance.

    • 4

Practice the dance as well as any free choice performances you will be giving prior to your tryouts. The more familiar you are with your routines the more comfortable you will be performing.

    • 5

Show enthusiasm when performing, using large motions. As many fans at a game will be far away, smaller movements will be hard to see. A mascot should always make big moves that are easy to see at a distance.

    • 6

Demonstrate high energy when performing. A mascot should never stand around doing nothing, so it is important to show that you have the ability to stay moving and dancing the entire time you are in front of the public.

    • 7

Speak loudly and clearly if asked to participate in group cheers, such as a performance with the cheerleading team. Many mascot positions will not require this, as the mascot is expected to be silent when in costume.
