How to Start a Miracle League Baseball Team

The Miracle League is a program designed to bring baseball into the lives of children with special needs. Founded in 1998, the league has adjusted rules and holds its games on an adjusted playing surface, designed to meet the needs of children in wheelchairs or walkers. Every player gets to bat once each inning, is always called safe at the base, and both teams win each game. Starting a Miracle League team is a great way to make a difference in your community and to help change the life of a child with special needs for the better.

      Contact the National Miracle League Office at 770-760-1933 and let it know that you're interested in starting a team in your community. Check to see that there isn't already a Miracle League team in your area. Join the Miracle League Association and request a Miracle League starter kit, which will provide information on where to begin.

      Contact special needs organizations in your community and explain your cause. Gauge their interest in helping you form a team. Explain why you want to start a Miracle League team and the great opportunity it provides for those involved in their organization. Ask groups if they would like to join your cause.

      Reach out to local businesses to raise funds for your team. You also will need to raise money to construct an adequate field if another Miracle League baseball team does not yet exist in your area. Purchase land on which to build your field, seek zoning permits from your local government and commission a construction company to build your field.

      Advertise your team within the community. Create fliers and place them in local recreation centers and schools. Include information such as registration fees, start-up dates and contact information. Organize teams evenly.
