How to Play Point Guard

The point guard position in basketball is like a conductor to an orchestra. The point guard makes sure that everyone on the court knows the court knows their role, when their supposed to do it, and how to do it. The point guard creates scoring opportunities for his teammates by getting them the ball in the right spots and in rhythm. The keys to a good point guard are good court vision, exceptional ball handling skills and a very unselfish mind set.

      Find an empty full court in order for you take full advantage of this exercise. Start directly under one basket with your training glasses on. With 1 basketball at a walking pace, dribble using your left hand only down the middle of the court until you reach the opposite basket. Dribble back to the starting basket with the right hand only. Be sure to stay in the middle of the floor which is primarily between the free throw lines. Staying in middle helps you maintain control of the floor and makes it harder for the other team to trap you or force you out of bounds. Repeat this exercise for 10 to 20 minutes.

      Dribble two balls, one in each hand from basket to basket directly down the middle of the floor at a ginger jogging pace. This will help develop your weak hand dribbling and improve your ball control. Do this drill for 20 minutes at a time. Remember to always dribble with your fingers not your palm and don't let the ball bounce higher than your waist.

      Find a wall and practice passing off of it. Work on the chest pass by holding the ball to the middle part of your chest with 2 hands and pushing off aggressively and sharply in a straight line into the wall. Practice the bounce pass by holding the ball at your navel with 2 hands and bouncing the ball to the mid-point of the floor between you and the wall. Step back further and further to improve you passing strength. Do this drill for 20 minutes at a time.

      Repeat steps 2 and 3 at full speed to improve your gametime speed and execution. Repeat all these steps for a full 2 weeks before you play 5-on-5 competition to see drastic results.

      Find a full court 5-on-5 pick up game. Try to be the person who handles the ball. This can be hard in pick up games because everyone like to dribble. It's okay to request for the ball, it shows confidence to the people you are playing with that this is your position.

      Focus on staying in the middle of the court and knowing where your teamates are at all times. Keep your head up at all times in case someone pops open so you can immediately get them the ball. Keep your passes simple to avoid turnovers.

      Control the pace of the game by picking your spots win to fastbreak and when to walk the ball up the court in order for your guys to get set. The point guard's job is to penatrate into the lane drawing defenders so that he can pass the ball out to the open man in a scoring position.
