How to Coach a Wheelchair Basketball Team

Coaching a wheelchair basketball team can be difficult, but it can also be very rewarding. Although you need to balance a lot of different aspects that you don't deal with in other forms of basketball, the game is still basically the same. By following these steps, you can coach a wheelchair basketball team.

Instructions

    • 1

Familiarize yourself with the rules of wheelchair basketball. This is especially true if you are new to the sport. Rules change from league to league in most sports, but especially wheelchair basketball.

    • 2

Talk with the players on your team about their limitations. As they can vary greatly, you must understand and relate to each individual. Some players are simply unable to complete certain tasks due to circumstances beyond their control. Knowing about your players' limitations is also a good way to determine which players are able to play which positions.

    • 3

Conduct practices as much as possible. As with other forms of basketball, wheelchair basketball is a game where practice becomes vital. The more you practice, the more your team is able to build team chemistry. Be fair with your players, but don't be afraid to criticize poor play.

    • 4

Figure out the strength and weaknesses of your team. Obviously, you want to play to your strengths as much as you can. You can both hide your weakness and work on your weaknesses in practice. Being honest with your team about both weaknesses and strengths is the best policy when coaching a wheelchair basketball team.
