1
Get started in coaching as soon as you can. This means at the high school and junior college levels. Work as hard as you can at this level because this is the time you will start getting noticed by colleges and universities.
-
2
Search websites that announce college job openings frequently, especially after you have been at a high school or junior college for at least 10 successful years. Such job announcements can be found on the NCAA website, Taz Sports and College Sports Career website. Also, logging on to a particular college or universities website and looking in the "jobs" section may land some leads.
-
3
Succeed in what you do. This does not always mean winning and losing, but what you get out of your players in the meantime. Great relationships with your players, other coaches, the community and administrators, will have a great impact on you getting a job at a higher level in the future.
-
4
Coach at the Division I level in college. If you can get your name out from being successful in a college program, professional teams will take notice and consider you when they are looking for a new head coach. There has never been a professional basketball coach that did not either coach or play at a major college level.
-
5
Apply. You never know if you can be a professional basketball coach unless you apply for head coaching positions with all professional basketball teams. Contact professional teams that you would be interested in coaching for. Also, search for these jobs on websites such as, NBA Team Jobs and NBA Careers.
