The Requirements to Be an NFL Coach
-
Knowledge Of The Game
-
Before all else, a detailed knowledge of the game is required to be a coach at any level, ranging from preparing game strategies and effective team practices to understanding player psychology.
Job Experience
-
An NFL head coach usually begins his career as an assistant, most often with high school and college teams. These lower coaches are eventually promoted to coordinator before becoming a head coach. Coordinators are lieutenants of the head coach responsible for certain groups of players and assistants.
Ability To Manage Stress
-
In addition to job experience, coaches must be able to deal with high levels of stress, particularly performance expectations. The average NFL coach is fired after only four years.
Communications Skills
-
Good communications skills are also valuable in persuading referees for favorable decisions, working with other assistant coaches and team officials, motivating and correcting players and convincing fans and the media that their performance will continue to be satisfactory.
Adherence To League Conduct Policy
-
Coaches must also follow the same league conduct policies as their players.
