Master a Soccer Skill During this Unique Off-Season

Nothing wrong with a one trick pony in soccer. This off-season, during this insane pandemic, why not master a soccer skill through repetition. Make sure it’s a move or a skill that you enjoy doing. Something that might even come natural. And perfect it.

Surprisingly there are a lot of top level pros that are experts at one soccer skill. Sure, they are fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game, but they prefer to do one move or trick whenever they get the chance. Actually, they set themselves up so they can do that one trick.

Meaning, if you are Christian Pulisic, that’s getting the ball out wide so you can go at the defender marking you. And for Pulisic, it doesn’t matter if there’s two or three defenders, he’s going to go at them and make them react to him. If he can’t beat them he’ll lay it off. Although if he can pick up speed then it’s hard to stop him.

How many times have you had a coach say don’t do that. Wait until you have a one versus one opportunity. Yes, that’s ideal but for Pulisic that’s what he does best - goes at defenders and defenders hate it. I’m sure next season defenders in the English Premier League are going to back off him a bit now.  In order to go at defenders in a EPL game, Pulisic repeatedly worked on doing that in training and on his own until it was second nature.

Take Arjen Robben for instance, who loves to cut in on his left foot and shoot. All teams and defenders know this but they still can’t stop him. And then there’s the greatest soccer player to ever play the game, Lionel Messi, who prefers his left foot too. Everyone knows this but they still can’t force him to use only his right. They’ve perfected their left foot to the degree that they don’t need their right.

So what’s the skill that you love to do? Maybe it’s a sprint dribble down the line. Or a spin turn. Perhaps it is a change of pace on the dribble. This off-season or during his lull in a pandemic crazed world, why not do that thing you do best on the soccer field over and over until you can do it in your sleep.

You might think you already have a certain skill perfected when in fact it’s at a decent level but not game ready. Make it so you can do that soccer skill under pressure in an intense game. Hammer a hundred left foot shots from a certain spot near the goal box. Whip in a hundred crosses with your right foot. Learn to juggle the ball high in the air with one foot.

Master a soccer skill during this unique off-season. Become a one trick pony.
