3 v 2 Finishing Drill

The following comes from Don Herlan (Smedley). Much more like this can be found from Smedley on his site at www.smedleyssoccersite.com.

Procedure:

The Goalkeeper begins play by striking a hard pass thru the cones set up on the 18. Player A lets the ball go thru to Players B and C, and then turns to receive a pass from them (Player A can also intercept and finish a weak pass from the GK). Players B and C play the first pass up to Player A and then make runs off of him, looking to combine for a finish on goal. The defenders release from the six-yard box with the first touch from the attackers, and play continues to completion.

3 v 2 Finishing Drill

Coaching Points:

  1. Verbal and Visual Cues – Communicate your ideas early when switching or overlapping.
  2. Speed of Play – A poor first pass up to Player A will throw off the timing of the runs and slow the entire attack down.
  3. Finishing – Whenever the defender charges in, fake the shot and continue to goal.

Progressions/Regressions:

Progression 1 – Play 2 v 2 to goal. Player A does not join the attack after laying the ball off.
Regression 1 – Play 3 v 1 to goal. Start with one defender in the six-yard box.
