Patterns of Play Flank Attack Drill
The following comes from Don Herlan (Smedley). Much more like this can be found from Smedley on his site at www.smedleyssoccersite.com.
Set Up: There are 12-15 players set up in the attacking third, starting at the cones.
Procedure: The Feeder begins the drill with a pass up to Player A. Player A plays a back pass to Player B or Player D. As the back pass is made, Players C and E make overlapping runs down the sideline. The last pass can be played thru to either flank, and the sequence finishes with a cross and finish. Upon completion, Player A stays in his position, and the other players rotate counter-clockwise. A new player rotates in for Player A every five minutes.
Teaching Topics:
- Speed of play.
- Changing the field.
- The Overlap run.
Progressions: Player B can play thru to Player D, and vice-versa.
Coaching Points:
- Always try to increase the speed of play with one touch passing.
- As the defense flows to one side of the field, quickly change the direction of play.
- Continue the overlapping run, even if the passer looks away from you.
