How to Become a High School Basketball Coach

Most, if not all, fans of the game of basketball have thought that they could make successful basketball coaches. Becoming a high school basketball coach provides a chance for lovers of the game to live their dreams while providing mental and emotional guidance for young men and women.

Instructions

  1. Find a Job

    • 1

Search your local newspaper's classified and sports sections for available positions. Coach positions may also be posted on local news, sports and high school websites.

    • 2

Try to gain some experience. Consider honing coaching skills in youth leagues or refereeing basketball games at a summer camp.

    • 3

Attend camps and workshops. Many major colleges offer coaching workshops over the summer.

    Prepare Your Team for Games

    • 4

Scout and evaluate each opponent. Most high school basketball teams run very basic offensive and defensive sets, but being aware of opposing players and coaches can help you lead your team to victory.

    • 5

Stress the fundamentals of basketball to your players. Most high school championships are won by the teams that understand and handle the basics of the sport the best.

    • 6

Keep practices focused on one area, such as offense, defense or rebounding. By sticking to one area and developing a related strategy, your players can concentrate on improving in every aspect of basketball and realizing new skills as the season progresses.

    • 7

Know your team's limitations. Unlike college or professional coaches, high school coaches may not be able to pick their players. Don't put your team members in difficult situations or expect plays that are too advanced for them.

    Win Your League

    • 8

Lead by example. If your players and assistant coaches see you being calm under pressure, they'll be more likely to respond in a similar fashion.

    • 9

Be ready to change. Successful coaches know mid-game adjustments are often essential to winning.

    • 10

Trust the players. If you have a player on a hot streak, run more plays for him or her. Doing so may not only excite your team, but it can also stimulate the crowd.
