Volunteer with youth leagues to familiarize yourself with the game and how the team dynamic works. This gives you the opportunity to build a rapport with younger players.

Familiarize yourself with the general rules and regulations of high school volleyball.

Learn the plays that are made during volleyball games. Attend high school volleyball games to see how the plays work in real-time. Attending local volleyball games can also give you an idea of which teams are better, so you can concentrate on what they are doing well.

Contact your state athletic board or the state high school athletic association and ask them for a list of qualification requirements, as requirements can vary by state.

Get yourself in shape and be prepared to be out on the floor with the volleyball players assisting them and teaching them plays.

Complete any courses necessary to become certified as a high school coach.

Apply for a position within the school for which you would like to coach. This could include a position as a teacher, janitor, cafeteria worker or even secretary. Schools are likely to hire coaches from employees within the school district. In fact, some schools may even require the coach to be a current school employee.

Fill out all applications and update your resume to send to the high school to which you are applying.
