How to Coach a Diamond Midfield in Soccer

The diamond midfield is a version of a four-man midfield that is utilized in either a 4-4-2 or a 3-4-3 formation. It is essentially a midfield that relies on a defensive midfielder, an attacking midfielder, and a wide midfielder. The benefit of this midfield arrangement is that it frees the wings for either wing forwards or attacking fullbacks to exploit, while also maintaining strength in the middle.

Use 4v4 games to ingrain the diamond shape. This is one of the most fundamental tactical shapes in soccer. The diamond in the 4v4 maintains the qualities of width and depth at all times. Once players get used to the concept of forming and reforming the diamond in relation to the movement of the ball and other players, the diamond midfield will become more effective.

Play a strong tackler at defensive midfield in order to disrupt the opposition attacks. Play a creative and fit player at attacking midfield to exploit weaknesses in the opposition defense. This player should be a good dribbler and passer. Play two very fit players at wide midfield, as these positions require a lot of running.

Play games of 9v9 in three zones. Play a 2-4-2 formation, with the 4 in the middle zone being in a diamond formation, and 2v2 in each endzone. This will allow the midfield to get used to the shape, as well as allow them to learn the ways that they can interact with both their forwards and their defenders

Utilize shadow play, 11v0, to walk through the formation using the diamond midfield. Use chalkboard or other visual reference in order to paint a complete picture of the shape in both attack and defense.

Scrimmage 11v11 in order to test the player's understanding of the demands of the diamond midfield. This will allow the team to work out the kinks in their positioning and communication. Once this has been addressed, playing the diamond midfield will become easier and more natural.
