How to Play a 4-4-2 with Diamond Midfield in Soccer
-
1
Break the team into four defenders, four midfielders and two forwards. Place your players in the proper positions based on individual skill sets.

2
Decide how you would like the defenders to be positioned. In this formation, the midfield must be in a diamond, but the defense could be lined up straight across, in a diamond or in an arc. The last of these three options eliminates the stopper, making him or her a sweeper, so there will be two sweepers. When you choose positioning that gives the team two sweepers, it generally creates a situation where one of the sweepers plays a very specific role guarding the other team's greatest offensive threat. This sweeper sticks to this player like glue and attempts to diminish his impact on the game as much as possible.

Choose the midfielder that will make up the diamond. The left and right midfield remain as in most formations. However, the center midfielder moves back and the center forward from other formations moves back creating a diamond within the midfield. The center midfielder plays ten yards behind the center forward and five yards behind each side midfielder. This is the key to this formation. These two center midfielders, the front one (who would be a center forward in a different formation) and center midfielder who makes the bottom of the diamond, play the biggest role in this formation by playing both offense and defense. They must communicate and anticipate what is required of them, whether they should make an offensive strike or hang back to stop the other teams' offense. Awareness and concentration is crucial for these midfielders.

Choose the forwards. These two forwards must possess speed, agility and anticipation of what each other will do. These forwards must work in conjunction with each other, stay within close proximity, and be aware of favorable angles to pass the ball to the middle in an attempt to set up a teammate. The cardiovascular nature of this position is magnified because of the missing forward, as two people are doing the offensive job of three.
