What Are the Duties of a Volleyball Coach?
-
Know the Sport
-
The volleyball coach's first duty is to know the intricacies of the sport. For example, he must understand the six basic types of sets, and know the difference between the various shots. A coach needs to come up with offensive and defensive strategies that help his team win. In addition to being a master tactician, the coach has to communicate his game plan well, so the team can understand it.
Pick Starters
-
A coach has no problem choosing the starting lineup in some sports. For example, in wrestling, the winner of the wrestle-off in each weight class starts. In track, the runner with the fastest time gets to run in that particular race. In volleyball the choice isn't as simple. The coach must use his judgment to pick the first line. This can often lead to bruised feelings. However, a good coach plays the best available team and does not worry about being everyone's friend. At the same time, he shows tact and compassion for the players who aren't starting. The coach needs to explain his decision delicately and encourage all team members to keep working hard and be team players.
Motivator
-
It's one thing for a player to have talent. It's another thing for the player to reach his potential. Sometimes players wilt in a pressure situation because of nerves. It's up to the coach to get his team mentally ready for games and practices. Sometimes, this means reminding the team of its goals when players hit a wall later in the season. Other times, it can mean pepping up an underdog team when no one thinks they can win. A well-timed motivational talk can do wonders.
Parent and Community Liaison
-
A volleyball coach is the face of the team. If a mother has a complaint about her son's playing time or another player picking on her daughter, the coach has to handle it. If there is a town sports council or sports association, the coach should join it and network with other coaches. If the local newspaper wants information, he should spend time giving an interview. So while a coach might prefer to focus on volleyball strategy, one of his roles is dealing with the public.
