Gopher Ball Fast Break
-
Gopher Ball Fast Break is a fast-paced volleyball drill that keeps the players moving with an emphasis on communication. Split the team into an even number of players and position them onto either side of the court. Make sure to have at least one setter and spiker in each group. The players rotate around the court after each play. One player on each side takes turns serving. Call for a rotation for both groups of players after players serve one ball, regardless of who wins the volley. Players must lay on the gym floor facing the net, with their arms and legs stretched out in a "Superman" type position until they hear the ball being served. Once the ball is served, both players jump up and send the ball over the net after achieving three hits. The group that wins the volley stand for the next play. The losing team must shuffle one lap around the gym floor once.
Around the World
-
The Around the World volleyball scrimmage drill combines footwork and ball-handling skills. Position players on both sides of the gm floor. As soon as a player hits the ball, she must run under the net and switch places with her positional counterpart on the other side of the net. Players quickly gain a better understanding of covering each other and communicating during free-ball game situations.
Queen of the Court
-
Queen of the Court pits two players against a full court. Position six players on one side of the court. Put a setter and a hitter on the other side of the court. The group of two takes turns serving the ball and returning the volley only after getting three hits. The group of six does not serve, but volleys and returns with three hits. Rotate the entire team until each player has received the opportunity to play on the two person group's side of the court and served. The two person group gains a better understanding of court-coverage techniques and communication. The six person side of the court learns better ball positioning skills when returning a volley.
