Drills for Volleyball Tryouts

When it come to volleyball tryouts your main objective should be to cover all the basics. You want to ensure that the players you keep are well rounded players in all positions. An easy way to do this is to set up a drill in passing, setting, serving and conditioning and set up a point system to determine the top players
  1. Passing

    • Set up a target near the net that represents the setter. Toss the ball over the net to the player who then passes the ball to the setter. Throw the ball to different position on the court, while the target remains in the same position. Count how many times the passer can hit the target out of ten attempts.

    Setting

    • Move your target to the outside hitter position. Have the player set up in right back. The coach will hit the ball and then toss it to the setter position. When the coach hits the ball the player can move into the setter position and set the ball to the outside. Keeping track of how many times the passer hits the target out of ten attempts.

    Serving

    • Have a player serve ten times. Keeping track of how many are playable serves. You can make this more difficult by giving each player specific positions on the court that she needs to hit in order for it to count.

    Conditioning

    • Conditioning is very important in volleyball. It takes endurance, but it also takes the ability to push your body for short bursts, followed by rest. Sprints are good examples of a player's ability to push her body. To measure this try a 10 in 1 drill. Line players up on the end line of the basketball court. Start a clock as each player runs to the other basketball end line and touches the line with her hand. This is one, as the players run back to the other end and touch the line it is 2. They go back and forth until they have touched the lines 10 times in under a minute. You can score players on their ability to complete the drill in 1 minute or individual times.
