Equipment for Teaching Tennis to Kids

Tennis is an enjoyable and physically taxing game. By teaching children the art of tennis, professionals and parents alike can encourage these youths to get and stay active. To effectively and efficiently teach tennis to a child, an instructor must have teaching tools designed specifically for the young learner.
  1. Child-Friendly Racket

    • Take the learner to a pro-shop or sporting goods store and pick out a racket just for him. If the child is a teen, he can likely use an adult-sized racket adeptly. If you are teaching a younger learner, you may need to buy a specialized child-sized racket to fit his small frame. By allowing the tennis player to pick his own racket, featuring his favorite colors or an emblem of his choice, you may effectively increase his interest in the sport.

    Starter Balls

    • Children often lack the power to hit standard tennis balls the length of the court. Allow your tennis student to feel success by beginning with starter balls. These balls have the same bounce as a standard tennis ball, but are made of foam so they are lighter and fly a further distance with a small swat. As the child becomes more skilled at the art of tennis, trade these balls out for standard tennis balls.

    Tennis Court Targets

    • Tennis court targets are useful in practicing aim. There are a variety from which you can select. Pick a knock-down target, featuring a goofy character, and allow your novice to take aim and attempt to knock the figure off his feet. Hone his aim even further by using a pop-target featuring a mesh basket into which your player can aim his shots.

    Tennis Trainer

    • A tennis trainer saves the learner laps around the court. This tool features a weighted base with a cord that is attached to a tennis ball. By setting this training tool up in center court or in a vacant parking lot, the learner can practice her hit without fussing with ball retrieval. This tool is useful for private, at-home practice, or as a daily lesson drill activity.

    Cones

    • When teaching very young children, some coaches opt to reduce the court size. By starting the player out on a more petite playing field you allow him more chances for success. Purchase some cones to use when setting up new course boundaries to make court size reduction a simple process.
