How to Coach Girls Youth Sports

Girls youth sports are plentiful today and every team needs a good coach. Coaching girls youth sports is a rewarding experience, as success in teaching athletic skills is complemented by satisfactions offered by cultivating life skills. The coach is responsible for teaching fundamental sports skills, athletic conditioning, motivating and, most-importantly, teaching team work. In order to coach a girls youth team, you must be dedicated to both the sport and the team. This is what Responsible Sports, supporter of volunteer youth sports coaches, refers to as a responsible coach.

Know your sport. In order to coach a girls youth team, you must be an expert in the sport. Responsible Sports refers to this as upholding the "spirit as well as the letter of the rules of the game." Ideally, you played the sport at a high level and are aware of all rules and regulations, as well as technical and tactical aspects. If not, read as much literature as you can about the sport, watch the sport live and on television, and talk with other coaches. Workshops are available (you can find them online) to help understand the rules of the game and best coaching practices.

Motivate your team. According to Responsible Coaching, the coach is responsible for the "development of the athlete as a whole person." This means you are as concerned about the emotional well-being of your athlete as your are for the physical development and well-being of your athlete. Effective motivation includes knowing your team and what makes them play at their highest potential as a group. As the coach, you are not only the leader of the team, you are also a mentor and counselor.

Teach teamwork. Understanding how to play together as a team is as important as developing individual skill. If a rowing crew does not work together, they'll never get to the end of the race. There are various sport-specific training aids and drills that teach trust and communication, two keys to teamwork. Players who do not trust each other will not pass each other the ball, or block for each other. Similarly, without effective communication, plays cannot be run.
