How to Handle an Abusive Coach

Nobody enjoys being berated in front of friends and family. Unfortunately it's not uncommon to have a coach belittle players or yell at family members in the stands. Of course you want to protect your child, avoiding abusive situations, all the while ensuring that your child has an enjoyable sports experience. Be the bigger person, and handle confrontations a coach might have with your child's sports team.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down specific concerns you have regarding the abusive coach. Cite specific instances, including dates and situations in question. Talk with other parents to see if they share the same concerns. Keep this in mind when talking with the coach, so it doesn't appear that you're a disgruntled parent.

    • 2

Handle the problem diplomatically. Ask the coach to sit down and discuss matters with you. Make sure there aren't any kids around, and talk about issues in an adult manner. It's best to have the conversation face-to-face, so try to avoid using the telephone for your meeting.

    • 3

Tell the coach that his way of treating the children and parents is unacceptable. Explain the problems you have and why it concerns you. Remind him that you're doing this for the best interest of your child and your child's teammates.

    • 4

Compliment the coach about positive aspects she's had on your child's team. This shows the coach that you appreciate the work she's done, but ask if she would want the same respect given to her child.

    • 5

Allow the coach to discuss how he feels in regard to this one-on-one discussion. Let him speak his side, possibly giving you an apology. If he does, graciously accept.

    • 6

Contact the school board if the coach refuses to cooperate. If you choose to write a letter, send it certified mail with a return receipt to ensure the board receives it. Refer to your specific instances in the letter along with the refusal by the coach. Request a meeting with the board and/or principal if you want a further investigation. If the coach is not involved with the school, contact the head of the league to get answers.
