How to Teach Level 4 Mushroom Gymnastics

Place hands shoulder-width apart on the mushroom surface. The left and right foot should begin together at the rear of the mushroom, approximately half of the gymnast's height away from the base. Angle the body onto the mushroom with a slight bend in the hips while leaning onto shoulders, which angle directly above the hands. All weight should be placed onto the shoulders and extend through to the hands.

Approach the circle with the left foot, stepping away from the base (to the left). Swing the left leg into the right, lifting both from the ground as they meet. Keep the chest aimed to the front of the mushroom and lift the right arm, transitioning the weight to the left shoulder. Have the student attempt to make it to the first quarter of the mushroom by aiming their feet to land at the right side of the mushroom while the body remains straight with legs together.

Add a continued leg swing to the front of the mushroom for a half circle. After the body passes under the arm in the first quarter turn, immediately return right hand to the mushroom behind the body. The chest remains forward, lifted, and draws the body to a full length straight line from shoulders to toes. The weight transition through the shoulders gives the power to continue the circle and is maintained through correct posture and in the direction of the chest.

Aim for a three-quarter circle around the mushroom. The weight will now switch to the right shoulder, angled directly above the right hand for stability. Maintain a forward facing chest as the hips turn to keep the correct posture. Lift the left arm as the hips approach and place the hand in front of the chest immediately after the body passes underneath.

Complete the circle. The linear body swings back to the start point with momentum from the shoulders alternately pressing into the mushroom. Add additional quarter turns to this full circle motion until the student can complete two full circles with correct form. Complete the skill by placing both feet together onto the mat while pushing the straight body off the mushroom and back onto the feet for a solid landing.
