How to Become a Head Coach in Sports

Coaching sports, including soccer, wrestling, football and basketball, requires dedication, patience and character. Coaches not only help develop the skills and talents of individuals and teams, they serve as a role model for sporting basics, such as sportsmanship and respect. The ability to deal with a varied range of personalities and skill levels can lead to a successful progression through the coaching ranks, and eventually lead to an opportunity to become the head coach.

Instructions

Get involved. Volunteer for a local sports team representing the sport you wish to coach. Youth programs are often in need of volunteers. Valuable experience can be gained by assisting experienced coaches with practice and game duties.

Participate in local coaching seminars and training programs. Become involved with local clinics and coaching seminars in your area. This will introduce you to other coaches who can offer sage advice on entering the sport as a head coach and possible openings that may exist in the leagues throughout your area.

Seek appropriate certifications and education. Certain sports may require coaches to obtain a specific coaching license depending on the requirements of the league. Those wishing to coach at the high school level may be required to obtain specific certifications, such as First Aid & CPR certification, and meet state certification requirements. For coaches who wish to coach at the collegiate level, many colleges require candidates to have coaching experience as well as a bachelor degree in a sports-related field.

Express your interest and apply for a head coaching position. For youth groups, head coaches are usually parents who volunteer their time to coach the team. If you wish to coach high school sports, application should be made to the Athletic Director of the high school. High schools often hire teachers to fill head coaching positions, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, though coaches with experience and training may be hired from a pool of outside applicants.
