Becoming a college coach is something many an athlete aspires to once the playing career is over. It can be a very rewarding as well as lucrative profession for those dedicated and disciplined enough to make it happen.

      To coach at the college level requires some background in the sport you want to become a coach in. A coach is supposed to provide expertise. Coaches who never played the sport are very rare.

      Educational background is something individual schools decide on. In some cases, colleges want a coach who has a degree in something, but many coaches do not have college degrees.

      Set your sights low. Stepping in as a head coach is not going to happen. Most coaches get their start as graduate assistants. That is more often than not a non-paying position.

      Study the game. Attend camps and clinics. Coaches at even the highest levels attend camps and clinics.

      Network, network, network. Jobs open all the time. Having a contact network of coaches that are aware of you is the most important asset that an aspiring coach can have.
