1
Decide first what kind of ASA softball team you would like to start. You have any choices in this matter. Deciding whether the team is a slowpitch or fastpitch softball team is the most important step. Once this decision is made, you can choose to start a co-ed, women's, men's, or youth team.

2
Choosing players is the next step. Fastpitch teams require 9 position players, while slowpitch requires 10. A good rule of thumb is to maintain 12 eager players. Having the players sign a commitment form is not a bad idea.

3
Participate in leagues or tournaments. If your team is registered in a league, you will have fields to practice on, a set schedule, and usually a one time entry fee. However, if you choose to create a tournament softball team, you must be certain there is money to do so. Fees for travel, tournament entry, and lodging are just a few of the financial situations that will come up. A coach or manager must be aware of these financial situations with any team.

4
Register with the ASA. Logging on to their website will give you an array of information to help you start your team. Links to leagues and tournaments are on this page as well as many other helpful links.

5
Buy basic equipment. Basic equipment usually includes balls, ASA regulatory bats and helmets. In addition to this equipment, uniforms must be decided on, including, the team's name, as well as colors. Sponsorships will pay for the uniforms and for entry fee into a league the majority of the time. If a business sponsors the team it is good practice to name the team after the sponsors business.
-
6
Tell your players what they are responsible for. Responsibility for gloves, cleats, socks, and any other personal equipment is the responsibility of the team members and their parents. Parents should also be given a schedule of the games, including tournaments the team may be entered in.

7
Planning a team dinner or swim party at the end of the year is a great idea. This gives the team members an opportunity to get together and shows the coach's appreciation for the team. Handing out team and individual trophies is also a fun way to say thank you. Team members of all ages will enjoy this act of appreciation.
