How to Become a Certified Golf Fitness Specialist

Frustration. Great golfers and beginners alike share this sentiment at one point or another in their golf careers. This aggravation affects the mental aspect of the golf game and changes the physical dynamic by impacting stance, swing, mobility and follow-through. Continuing improper form like this can lead to shoulder pain, back ailments or other strains in the long run. But who can golfers turn to? Guaranteeing that the physical part of your game synchronizes with the mental aspect proves difficult when you don't have perspective. Certified golf fitness trainers specialize in enhancing your golf performance. Many golfers consider transitioning into this specialized vocation for the love of the game. If done successfully, it can lead to a rewarding career.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the right program. Research certified fitness golf trainer programs in your area. Assure yourself that the program offers a strong curriculum based on strength, core conditioning, physical therapy and effective teaching methods for assessing physical injuries and golf swing mechanics.

    • 2

Enroll in a program. Correspondence courses, such as the Golf Fitness Program and Certification held at the Golf Fitness Academy and run by fitness expert Kelly Blackburn, provide a comprehensive and easy-to-follow program for the everyday working man who does not have time to tear himself away from his 9-to-5 job.

    • 3

Attend in-person training. One of the most well-respected and credible programs is at the Titleist Performance Institute. The TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor Program presents three levels of experience that focus on overcoming physical restrictions that limit student success. The classes are taught by the Titleist Performance Institute's Health and Fitness Advisory Board.

    • 4

Pass the tests. Once you've completed the courses, you must complete the final test with a passing score in order to receive certification from any program.

    • 5

Enhance your credibility. If you do not have a bachelor's degree specializing in kinesiology, biology, exercise science, physical education or similar subject matter from a college or university, continue your certification course beyond the first step.

    • 6

Look for placement. Search the PGA or LPGA websites for information regarding institutes or organizations--such as Hansen Fitness Company, Body Balance for Performance and SHAPE Toronto Golf PARformance--that may be hiring certified golf fitness trainers.
