Do you have your eyes on a goal that just seems impossible to achieve? Have you been so close to taste it, but just couldn't finish? Well there are a few critical steps to learning to "dig deep" enough to achieve anything you put your mind to. Will it be easy? No. Nothing in life that's earned is easy.

So step one is to write down your goal on something and show it to someone. It doesn't matter if its a paper napkin, or if you paint it on a canvas and have it framed. Humans write things down because they mean it, and they want everyone else to know it. This is a critical foundation step that will switch key self-enabler thought processes that are paramount in getting over those inevitable obstacles you're going to face along the way.

Create an action plan and break it into manageable sized chunks with mini-goals along the way to keep you on track. Achieving some of these smaller goals will keep you focused, and give you the extra motivation to work towards achieving the next one. A schedule also provides structure and routine to your life.

Determine how bad you want it. You will have to be willing to sacrifice some of the things that you love the most. Try to imagine the worse possible scenario or obstacle that could come along. Are you willing to do what it takes to get by it? If you are, see step 4.

Prepare your mind for the long haul. We Americans are especially terrible at not being willing to give good things time to happen. Too many times have I heard, "I'd love to (insert any goal here), but I just don't have the time." Or "Geez, it would be nice to (insert goal here), but that would just take too long." Americans want it, and they want it yesterday. Don't be that person. Be willing to let it take as long as it takes. Life happens to us all, and there will be the inevitable obstacle of time, I guarantee it. But if you prepare yourself ahead of time for that long haul, digging deep will come a little easier.

Believe in your abilities and visualize yourself at the finish line. Believe in the fact that not only can you do it, but that you will. Visualize yourself achieving your goal. Visualization techniques are out there and they are proven to work. I once read an interesting article in a popular triathlon magazine about visualization techniques. A study was conducted on two groups of athletes of the same fitness level who worked out together, and completed the same exact exercise routines. One of the groups were told to complete a 5 minute "visualization" workout or exercise every night before bed. The other group was told not to. The results found that those who visualized themselves training actually got significantly stronger than another group who didn't.

Having that sweet taste of victory will be key to digging even deeper when you hit that bump in the road and those tiny little thoughts of doubt try to creep into your mind.

Never give up. Make sure that you do whatever it takes to get there. Believe that the pain, suffering, blood, sweat, and tears - its all worth it in the end. Once you believe this, you will finally be able to dig deep enough accomplish anything.
