1
Decide on the kinds of clients you want. Maybe you work best with the elderly, marathoners, brides before their big days--or maybe you thrive on a mix. Also decide on how far away you want to pull clients from. If there are enough of your kind of client in your area, no problem; if not, you may need to relax your standards.
-
2
Take advantage of your proximity. You meet regularly with your clients, and because they trust you, you are in a great sales position.
-
3
Ask current clients for testimonials. If one of them says, "I haven't felt this healthy and strong in 20 years!" ask if you can quote them. Usually if you have a good working relationship, people are happy to let you use their words. Those testimonials allow other people to say the good things about you that you could never say about yourself.
-
4
Ask current clients for referrals. If one of them compliments you, ask if they have friends who may be interested in your services.
-
5
Carry your business card with you. If you ask for a referral, or if your personal training comes into a conversation, be ready to offer your card. Your goal is to get your name and phone number in front of as many people in your target clients as possible. You may also be able to put your business card on public bulletin boards, such as at the supermarket.
-
6
Offer clients a brochure with your name and contact information on it. "I just wrote this brochure about stretching out your shoulders," you can say. "Do you want one?" If you're lucky, not only will she want one, she will want another for her brother-in-law or her best friend.
-
7
Use testimonials on your brochures and website. People want to know that other people like them have benefited from your services.
-
8
Have a website. Sorry to say it, but most of those business cards and brochures will end up in the recycling bin. Even if they lose that piece of paper, though, potential clients can find you if your information is on the Internet. You can set up a very simple website or a blog for free (see Resources below).
