How to Console a Team After a Loss
Instructions

1
Begin by mentioning some of the good things your team did during the loss. Chances are that your team didn't play horribly throughout the entire game. Bring up some parts of the game in which your team played especially well, such as if they make a great comeback attempt. Simply bringing your team down during an entire post-game speech won't help them play better the next time around.
-
2
Discuss why the team lost this particular game. After you brought up some good points about the game, it's time to move onto the portions of the game where your team didn't play up to their or your standards. Bring up specific instances which you believe cost your team the victory. When doing this, try not to raise your voice or yell at your team. This will sound more like scolding instead of instructing.
-
3
Avoid singling out a specific player. Every loss is a team loss, even if one player had a particularly horrendous game. Make your team aware that everybody is accountable for a defeat. If you do have a problem with the way one person performed during the game, be sure to take him aside and speak with him about the game. Never do so in front of his players, as that will shatter both his confidence and the confidence his team has in his abilities.
-
4
Praise the other team for things they did well during the game. Obviously, your team was outplayed during the loss. Bring up portions of the game in which they outplayed your team. Use these instances as a learning tool for you and your players. Perhaps you could integrate some of their tactics into your game plan or use this loss as a way to avoid the same thing from happening the next game.
-
5
End on a positive note. Sure, you lost the game, but no team wins them all. Remind your players that you have faith in their abilities and that you know that everybody can perform better. Mention your next opponent and how you're looking forward to that game as a way to redeem this most recent defeat. Leave your players wanting to prepare themselves for the next game so as to avoid another loss.
