How to Motivate a Team During a Game

Whether you are a coach or a team captain, there will be times when you need to motivate your team in the middle of a game. Your team might be playing poorly, losing its focus or just in need of a little pep talk. Motivating the team is important because saying or doing the right thing can be the difference between winning a game or losing it. Prepare yourself before the game so you are ready to motivate team members when they need it.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell your team the mistakes they are making in the game. If they are not executing the game plan properly, tell them so. After letting them know what might be affecting the result of the game, don't focus on the mistakes anymore.

    • 2

Tell the players how to fix what it is they are doing wrong. Don't make the repair seem daunting or impossible. Inform players how to improve, and be specific in your instructions. Exude confidence that they can turn the game around.

    • 3

Point out the things that your team is doing well. Let players know how much their good work has helped the team so far. Encourage them to keep it up.

    • 4

Point out the things the opposing team is doing wrong. This will let your players know which weaknesses that they should target.

    • 5

Remind your team of times in the past when they might have started out poorly, but finished well. This will show them they can do it again.

    • 6

Encourage the players to motivate each other during the game, either by praising each other or telling each other to shake off mistakes.
