Grip the ball properly to ensure a solid pitch. This can be accomplished by holding the ball with the fingertips, rather than allowing the softball to settle into the palm. Use the thumb, little finger and the middle finger for a balanced grip. Curl the other two fingers under the softball to help with balance in the grip.

    • 2

Get into a solid pitching stance. This involves turning the body into a sideways position. The gloved hand should be facing the intended target, whether it is a batter or a team member. The hand holding the softball should be away from the intended target. However, the head should remain turned to allow focus on the target.

    • 3

Pull the hand holding the softball backward. This action places the ball and hand in a position to begin raising the arm for the pitch.

    • 4

Take careful aim at the intended target, allowing for wind direction and the distance.

    • 5

Throw the ball with an overhand rather than an underhand approach. This will provide more control over the direction and velocity of the ball. Allow your wrist to snap forward slightly as the release begins. Make sure the softball disengages from the thumb first and then the other fingers.
