Clothing That Bungee Jumpers Use

Bungee jumping is an extreme activity that allows you to hook yourself up to a cord from a significantly high altitude, then plunge into the air for a freefall. This type of jump makes it possible to experience falling through the air until the maximum length of the cord is reached and you eventually hang upside down from a safe distance to the ground. This high-adrenaline undertaking is not for the faint-hearted and it should never be done without wearing the right clothes and gear.
  1. Type of Clothes

    • Although there is no universal outfit requirement when bungee jumping, as a basic guide, any sport or casual type of clothing will do. Wearing something that would fit weather conditions is ideal. Clothes should be comfortable and not prone to safety or tangling issues or any physical problem with the rope and harness. A bungee cord is typically made of nylon or a number of latex strands wrapped like a rope, then enclosed in a tough exterior case. The harness is typically fitted to your mid and upper body, so wearing clothes that can provide additional protection to the body like a collar or thick fabric is generally recommended.

    Clothing Size and Fit

    • The size and fit of the clothing is important when bungee jumping. Clothes can be anything from a sweatshirt on a hot day or a windbreaker on a cool day. Jeans, cargo or jogging pants are typical choices as well. However, it is important to note that if wearing something too loose, you may have a problem when hanging upside down when bungee jumping. This may also interfere with the bungee cord or harness. If wearing something too fit, it may constrict your body or hinder your breathing when bungee jumping.

    Footwear

    • Like with the clothing requirements, your choice of footwear can be anywhere from casual to sporty. It is also fine to only wear socks or even bungee jump barefoot. If you are wearing shoes, wear flat and closed shoes with socks. Also, make sure your footwear is secure. Open shoes, slip-ons, sandals or flip-flops can not be used as you will simply lose them when in freefall.

    Things to Remove

    • Remove all jewelry, accessories, eyeglasses or hats before doing the jump as these may get caught on the bungee cord, which may lead to possible injuries like the limbs getting tangled with the rope. If wearing clothes with pockets, make sure they are empty. Car keys or cell phones can be lost or broken and may also cause accidents during freefall. Don't wear your contact lenses to avoid the risk of losing them or even injuring your eyes.
