How to Get Sponsored for Surfing

If you want to get sponsored for surfing, you've got to practice and you've got to impress surfboard manufacturers, managers, the press and the fans. It's not easy to get sponsored, but if you enter competitions and start placing, you may just draw the kind of attention that garners big deals.

      Take a lesson or hit the beach on your own. Either way, the first thing you need to do is pick up skills. You have to demonstrate a high skill level to get sponsors to give you free equipment or pay for your travel and entry fees. Make contacts within the surfing community because you may need them later.

      Learn how to do basic competition moves like a 360 slide and practice riding big waves. Develop a signature move. Watch skateboarders and snow boarders for inspiration. If you develop something that makes you unique, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by sponsors.

      Enter a local contest. Even if you have to drive a few hours out of your way, you need to enter an amateur contest to get a feel for competitive surfing. Enter according to your age and your ability and keep an eye out for beginner events.

      Participate in scholastic surfing events. If surfing is offered at your school, you may have access to free training and instruction. You'll get the opportunity to test your skills against kids your age and you'll get the kind of exposure you need to earn scholarships and attention from sponsors. Join the National Scholastic Surfing Association and compete in sponsored events around the country (see Resources below).

      Get someone to take photographs of you riding big waves. Spend a day with a videographer and capture your best moments on film. Post amazing rides online or create a promotional DVD press packet to send out to potential sponsors. Be sure to include some biographical information about yourself and list any contests you may have won.

      Get a manager. Look for a manager who works with athletes and has a proven track record. Let them know exactly what you're looking for in a sponsorship deal. Some companies sponsor surfers for clothing and equipment only, while others pays for travel and entrance fees as well as appearance fees and even housing and training.
