How to Comb Your Surfboard

Sliding off the top of your surfboard right before carving a wave is both annoying and dangerous. As most boards are made from reinforced fiberglass, the riding surface is naturally slippery. To combat this, surfers apply thick wax to their boards for added traction while riding the waves. For an even firmer grip, a wax comb is used to add texture to the wax layer. All you need to comb your board is the appropriate type of wax and a simple wax comb.

      Select a type of wax formulated for the water you'll be riding. Waxes are rated for tropical, warm, cool and cold waters. For example, if you'll be surfing in Hawaii, select a warm or tropical formula. But if you'll be surfing on the east coast, opt for a cool or cold formula. Also select a base coat wax to enhance the grip of your formulated wax.

      Apply the base coat wax to the areas of the board where your body makes contact, such as the sides where your hands grip and the back where your feet will be planted. Rub the wax on using firm pressure and a smooth, circular motion. Continue application until the board is coated with an even layer.

      Make a light crosshatch pattern on your base coat, using your wax comb. Avoid dragging the comb too heavily, as this will shred the base coat.

      Apply your formulated wax to the top of the base coat, using the same method as before.

      Comb a crosshatch pattern into your formulated wax. Use slightly more pressure this time, for maximum grip while on your board.
