How to Repair a BMX Wheel

If you ride your bike often and over all types of roads it is inevitable that you will need to fix a tire. It is wise to keep an emergency patch kit with you at all times, but the tire should be properly removed and fixed as soon as possible. Instructions

Lay your bike on a flat surface away from traffic or pedestrians. Use a wrench to loosen and remove the nuts that hold the tire in the axle in the frame of the bike. If it is hard to move the nuts, spray them with a little silicone lubricant. If your bicycle is newer it might have a lever you can flip up to release the mechanism and the wheel will just come out of the frame.

Lay the wheel on a flat surface. Deflate the inner tube by pressing on the air valve until all the air is gone. Carefully insert the tip of the lever under the rim of the wheel and pull out the edge of the tire. Leave the first lever in place and use the second one to move slowly around the rim of the tire until it comes off.

    • 3

Fix the inner tube with a patch or replace it if it is not possible to patch. Check to see if your bike has a direction marker on the wheel in case the tread needs to be placed in a specific direction.

    • 4

Inflate the new inner tube partially. Find the valve in the hole of the rim. Starting at that point ease the tube back into the tire. Use your thumbs to push the tube into the tire all the way around until it is completely placed within the tire.

    • 5

Double check to make sure the tube is unimpeded within the tire. If it is bunched up it could burst when inflated. Inflate the tube slowly. Keep checking as you go along to make sure that the tube is even within the tire. Do this until the tire is properly inflated.

Replace the nuts and tighten with the wrench. Make sure you tighten the nuts thoroughly. Test the bike to make sure the tire is functioning.
