Brakeless BMX riding has become a popular setup in the freestyle community, mainly because it is easy to do bar-spin and free-hand tricks without brake levers getting in your way. But a certain level of know-how and precaution is needed. Get the most of your brakeless BMX bike by learning how stop the bike effectively.

Instructions

In an open practice area, begin pedaling forward at a comfortable speed. Start slow to get used to this maneuver before accelerating.

    • 2

Practice standing upright on the bike with only one foot on the pedals. A good sense of balance is required to stop a brakeless bike. Practice turning and riding in a straight line with one foot hanging off the bike.

    • 3

When you are comfortable with riding with one foot, accelerate and ride in a straight line with one foot off the pedals.

    • 4

Move the foot that isn't on the pedals behind the seat, where the rear tire passes the frame.

    • 5

Lightly press your foot down on the tire. Your shoes should "catch" between the tire and the frame.

Practice the maneuver until you can do it right every time. Using more pressure on the foot pressing on the rear wheel will stop the bike faster but could lock up the rear tire, sending you into a skid. Strive to find a balance between stopping quickly and stopping abruptly.
