How to Paint a BMX Outer Rim

If you want to stand out when riding the park or competing at BMX events, customize your bike by painting your outer rims. The outer rims are, as the the name suggests, the outside of the BMX bike's rims. Prepare the wheels with some preventative methods to ensure the paint gets only where you want it. The prep takes more time than the painting. Use spray paints that adhere to metal and be sure to use a coat of primer first.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wheels from the BMX bike. Spread out newspaper where the painting takes place.

    • 2

Deflate the tires and remove the inner-tubes and tires from the rims. Place painter's tape on the inside of the rims, being sure to cover the entire inside of the rims.

    • 3

Wrap tape around the spokes and the wheel's hubs.

    • 4

Set the wheels on the newspapers and give them one coat of the spray paint primer. Let the primer dry according to the maker's instructions.

    • 5

Add a coat of the spray paint after the primer is dry. Wait for the paint to dry. Inspect the rims after the first coat is dry and check that the paint is even and the color good. If not, apply one more coat of the paint and let dry.

    • 6

Put the inner tubes and wheels back on the wheels. Place the wheels back onto the bike and go show off your custom ride.
