How to Become a Freestyle Motocross Pro

Travis Pastrana, the best known freestyle motocross rider, didn't get to the top by being lazy. He got there through hard work and many broken bones and concussions. Becoming a professional freestyle motocross rider requires a lot of time and money; buying a good bike and building ramps and foam pits can be pricey.

  1. Getting Started

    • 1

Enroll in motocross schools and camps. Strengthen your riding basics with Jim Gibson's Motocross Training. Freestyle motocross camps, like the FMX Schools and camps run by X Games riders Ronnie Renner, Adam Jones, Matt Schubring and Steve Sommerfeld will teach you how to hit a ramp perfectly while also learning how to do a fully extended superman seat grab.

    • 2

Win tournaments and local competitions. Big competitions such as the Red Bull X-Fighters are invite only, so in order to get invited, you must win smaller events. Some county fairs like the Allegany County Fair in Maryland have freestyle motocross tournaments.

    • 3

Contact motocross clothing companies for sponsorships. They love having their product sponsored. Red Bull is an excellent sponsor since they have their own riding compound and foam pit for their riders to train.

Film your best tricks and sessions. Send the videos to touring companies like the Nuclear Cowboyz and Gravity Slashers. Create a YouTube account and put the videos on there as well. Promote the videos through various message boards, such as the FreestyleMTX forum. X Games competitor Willy Watts made it to FMX's biggest event through word of mouth on such boards.
