Ironman Wetsuit Rules

The Ironman is an internationally recognised long-distance triathlon regulated and organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. Strict rules apply regarding equipment used and the clothing worn by contestants in order to prevent foul play. The Ironman wetsuit policy is detailed and stipulates which style of suits are legal and which aren't.
  1. Wetsuit Rules

    • The wetsuit policy of all Ironman and Ironman 70.3 events as of September 2010 clearly stipulates what kind of wetsuits are legal. As wetsuits are made from buoyant material, they can assist athletes during the swimming leg of the race. A wetsuit's thickness cannot measure more than 0.197 inches. Variance in thickness is allowed for seams and non-buoyant jersey material. Full wetsuits which cover both arms and legs are permitted, as are short wetsuits.

    Water Temperature

    • Depending on the water temperature, wetsuits may not be permitted. If the water temperature is 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit or colder, a wetsuit which meets all other standards may be worn. A wetsuit is prohibited at water temperature at or above 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit. Athletes may wear a wetsuit between 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit and 83.8 degrees Fahrenheit, however by doing so they will become ineligible for any awards, including the World Championship slots.

    Prohibited Wetsuits And Enforcement

    • As of September 2010, according to the official Ironman website the only wetsuit prohibited from competition is the De Soto Water Rover wetsuit. Race Officials enforce the wetsuit policy by monitoring the transition area and the swim venue on the race morning and by checking individual athletes. Any competitor caught using a prohibited wetsuit or a wetsuit that doesn't meant current Ironman stipulations will be disqualified.

    Additional Rules

    • Under no circumstance may an athlete wear a prohibited wetsuit, even if they are not pursuing an award or an entry slot for the World Championship. Neoprene swim socks may only be worn when the water temperature is 65 degrees Fahrenheit or below. The use of Neoprene swim socks in water temperatures above 65 degrees Fahrenheit is prohibited.
