How to Make a Pushbike Foam Pit

While the idea of a foam pit originated as a practice tool for gymnasts, it has since caught on as a useful item for BMX extreme bike riders. Like gymnasts, BMX riders use foam pits for making soft landings while practicing jumps and other tricks. Although you can purchase foam blocks new through gymnastics/BMX shopping websites like Foam Order, you also can create your own foam pit by recycling friends' and family members' couch cushions and foam mattresses.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase an above ground pool that is about 15 feet in diameter and 4 to 6 feet deep. Look for pools without water pumps on eBay if you do not wish to purchase one new.

    • 2

Let your friends and family know you're taking any foam from unwanted furniture or old foam mattresses. Put up flyers around town with your information or place an ad for free on websites like Craigslist. Ask your local gym if they have any foam pieces they're getting rid of.

Purchase or borrow a trampoline that fits the pool snugly. Again, eBay is a good resource if you do not wish to buy a new trampoline. Set up the pool in your selected spot and place the trampoline in it. Fill the pool with the foam pieces.

Fill the pool to the top with foam. Add sponges of assorted sizes if needed to fill in any gaps.
