How to Convert a 6-Volt to an 12-Volt Enduro

An Enduro is a motorcycle typically used in off-road motorcycle racing. These motorcycles usually are powered by a 6-volt dynamo or a 12-volt dynamo. Upgrading a 6-volt unit to a 12-volt system requires a few modifications to the 6-volt dynamo and the systems that it powers, such as the light bulbs and the power regulator.

Things You'll Need

  • Soldering iron
  • Solder
  • Electrical wire

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the 6-volt power regulator and remove the mounting screws with a screwdriver. Remove the regulator and set it aside.

    • 2

Mount the new 12-volt regulator in the same position as the old 6-volt unit. Secure it with mounting screws and plug the wiring connector into the new unit.

    • 3

Remove the 6-volt battery by disconnecting the two terminal wires and disconnecting the strap that holds the battery in place. There should be room for a small 12-volt battery in that same space. Measure the length, depth and width of the space and take the measurements with you when you go to choose a 12-volt battery.

    • 4

Locate the dynamo and remove it from the motorcycle. Open the dynamo housing to expose the coils and the coil wiring. Locate the gray wire and the red wire coils.

    • 5

Cut the gray wire from the end of the gray wire coil. Strip a half-inch of insulation from both ends of a short yellow wire.

    • 6

Solder one end of the new yellow wire to the end of the coil that used to have the gray wire attached to it. This is done by holding the soldering iron on the end of the coil wire along with the end of the yellow wire.

    • 7

Add solder once the two wires are hot until the two wires are joined together by solder. Let the solder splice cool.

    • 8

Repeat the solder process for the other end of the new yellow wire by joining it to the end of the red wire coil. Be sure to keep the red wire attached. When you are done, the red wire and the yellow wire should be attached to the red wire coil.

    • 9

Close the dynamo housing and reattach the dynamo to the motorcycle.

    • 10

Install the new 12-volt battery and change all of the 6-volt light bulbs to 12-volt light bulbs. Double check all wiring before starting the new system for the first time.
